Zoom-Make the lessons more student-centered-Practical Ideas #zoom #teachonline

This video demonstrates some practical ideas about making Zoom lessons more student-centred. It suggests two great tools that combine really effectively with Zoom and can help to take pressure off the teacher and can lead into breakout room activities.
Many teachers are struggling with ideas that will work in Zoom but also with tools they can use when teaching with Zoom that might take the pressure off the teacher and help to make the lessons more student centred. In this video I show you examples using Padlet and examples using Google Forms and these are two tools that I often use when working with Zoom or other tools.
Learn to use Padlet
cncard.info/label/u2mGnm3U0aierZ4/sh-p-n.html
Advanced Padlet
cncard.info/label/ypyjspbGkYaG2Nk/sh-p-n.html
Learn to use Google Forms
cncard.info/label/lnuieomYzp93sq8/sh-p-n.html

The idea is to set up activities that get the students producing material and then using that material as the basis for a breakout room activity using Zoom. We need to take pressure of the teachers when delivering learning and get students working in breakout rooms. Some of the activities I suggest in this video will give you the chance to get the students working on an activity, giving you time but also from the content the students have generated you can then do further activities.
It is very easy for a Zoom session to become very teacher-fronted. We need techniques that can help to take pressure off the teacher and get push some of the learning over to the students. We need to think about the classroom and how we set up activities that the students work on and give us time to move around the class and check on our students. We can do similar things when we teach online. We need to set up activities that move away from Zoom, get the students doing an activity and then bring the focus back on the teacher. The two tools I suggest for this can be really useful because they can be used in a whole range of different ways when we teach online.
For example students can make timelines in Padlet, they can work on maps , they can brainstorm and share ideas. They can do this as a group or they can create their own Padlets too. You can get the students to move from a class activity to doing something with Padlet in the breakout rooms.
Teaching online is not easy. Unfortunately we do need to learn a few new tools. We need to learn to use Zoom but we also need to learn to use tools that can work with Zoom. Google Forms and Padlet are two online technologies that you will use time and time again in your teaching and learning.

Russel - I find your tutorials so practical and easy to follow. I would like to know how you are able to be present live on screen (in the left corner (as in this video) while simultaneously having your slide up in the full screen. Is this done with a particular app/software?

FYI, Zoom is not working, upgraded router, kids can't hear me, I can't hear them. Peardeck was not working on child's computer even though it was tested and worked all weekend. Classes at 12:30 pm don't work because of too much traffic and kids come back after lunch. Nearpod was down today. Any other suggestions?
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos)
Maria, really sorry to hear that. I have never had that happened to me though I admit I have had some tough times. Often it is to do with the internet speed of my student's computers.

I love using Padlet. The trouble I'm running into is that when I paste the link into my Zoom chat, only a few of my students are able to click on the link. It is as though the link isn't live for many of my students. I tested it many times and it works for my team and me. Any ideas on why this might be happening? Permissions? Security? Thank you!
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos)
It is probably to do with the speed of their connections or possibly the fact they are using a mobile device to access your session. I don't normally have this problem.

I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this but it’ll avoid frustration if it’s realized that the students will not see the results of the form when they go to the breakout rooms. This happened to me. They will only see the survey or whatever they filled out. It seems that another link has to be copied and then sent to the students via chat. Then, when they click on that second link, voila, they’ll open the results and can discuss it.
Russell Stannard (Teacher Training Videos)
Carlton, you are completely right but I normally screen share the results to the whole group and then talk through them. More free Zoom videos here www.teachertrainingvideos.com/Zoom

Google form : collect email and release the mark via google form. If you have to keep the mark for a dashboard, export to excel and use the email address for a Vlookup formula.
