As an idea for your "fingers", make them individual toggle locks that hold open the channel when they are locked upright, thus muting it. You're muting the individual bass inputs electronically, but I think it's more in the spirit of the machine to have mechanical mutes.

Hey Man. I hear you are worried about the machine being too loud.
You say you want to make music that lives up to this machine. So people will be amazed hearing the music without seeing the machine. not only playing some of your songs or other people's songs and just be ok with it. You want to play music you yourself and all other people have never heard before. I think it's hard to amaze people these days and play music no one has ever heard before.

Therefor it might be interesting to think about really EMBRACING the 'side sounds' of the machine and use them as a new dimension. Every sound that comes out of the marble machine is in a way synchronised and in rythm, right?
Shouldn't you just use these sounds, record and manipulate them (reverb, echos, filters,..) so you they become a unique element and give deeper meaning to your music? An extra story., a higher level. It will sound so special without people even looking at it. NOTHING on earth will therefor sound te same as your machine and your music.
Maybe you should follow and record the whole path of one marble. Brainstorm about putting a tiny microphone in a marble or whatever. Discover every bit of noise and rythm your machine makes and use it as something unique because no one ever build one before.
I believe all of your time will never be wasted and you wil live up to your dreams because I see,
That's what you do. You are more passionated and driven than most of the people I've ever seen. Respect.

Hey Martin! I sent you this as a Facebook message too. Haven't seen your hammered dulcimer in a video for a long time. I play the H.Dulcimer too and live in Indiana, USA. We have a big HD festival in Michigan each summer, but it's been canceled because of the virus. They're putting together a virtual HD festival and I thought you might be interested in joining in. Here's the Facebook group for the festival. It's going to be June 5-6, 2020. It would be great if you can attend!
